Today we celebrate and remember one of the greatest men to have ever lived, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In honor of this heroic man’s life, I decided to read some of his writings as well as listen to some of his speeches. Through this time of learning I was reminded that this man lived a life that was centered on Christ. Here are a few of the examples:
- His life was centered in love. To see a man so rooted in love in spite of all of the hate he received is a perfect picture of Christ. Dr. King knew that the only way to impact a divided world was to show the love of Jesus. By his example and commitment to love others, freedom was earned. We can learn so much from this and remember: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)
- His life was centered on faith. Dr. King had the faith to believe God to do the impossible in our nation during that time. He believed in God even though it didn’t seem possible in the eyes of many. Because of his faith, a nation was impacted. We can learn from this by believing God to do the impossible in our lives. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
- His life was centered on Jesus. Dr. King didn’t just quote God’s Word, he lived God’s word. He was a Godly husband, a Godly father, and a Godly leader. Our lives should not just resemble Christ on a Sunday morning; they should resemble Christ in everything we do. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1)
As we honor an incredible man of God today, let us strive to be the example of a follower of Jesus like he was. Let us live a life built on love, faith, and Jesus.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
